With the largest vertical drop on the Eastern seaboard (measuring 3,430 feet), 80 trails and 11 ski lifts, Whiteface Mountain is a skier's paradise. In warmer months it's a fantastic vantage point: Ride on the Cloudsplitter Gondola to the summit, and you'll be treated to an incredible view of the neighboring peaks.
You can also drive part of the way up, then hike or take an elevator lift to the top. A TripAdvisor user says: "I chose to hike up the trail. … It was a bit of exertion, but nothing impossible. Do not attempt the climb, however, without the right footwear, since the boulders are very smooth."
Located northeast of Mirror Lake in Wilmington, N.Y., Whiteface Mountain's lift tickets start at $77 per adult, but novice skiers should be aware that the trails icy trails can be tough to tackle if you're still learning. Check the website for more details.
