|About these ratings|
The Red Light District seems almost synonymous with Amsterdam. As WCities.com says, "it is proof of Amsterdam's liberality and social tolerance and merits a quick tour." De Wallen (as it's known in Dutch) is located in the city center and is most alive at night, when the red lights beaming from the canalside storefronts provide a stark contrast against the darkness. There are also numerous sex shops nearby and even an erotic museum.
Many travelers agree that the Red Light District worth a visit. During the day you'll see fewer crowds and fewer women in the windows, but come nighttime swarms of people descend on the streets. Before you head out with your camera in tow, be aware that you are not allowed to take pictures of the prostitutes. Policemen patrolling the area have been known to confiscate cameras and even throw them into the canal or worse.
