The SS Pedernales was a World War II lake tanker that was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat en route to a refinery on Aruba. The center portion of the vessel still remains submerged off the shore of Palm Beach, approximately 25 feet below sea level. Skilled divers might be wary of making a trip to this rather shallow wreck site, but the Pedernales is a great way to "get your feet wet" in the sport.
TripAdvisor reviewers enjoyed the approximately 40-minute swim to Pedernales because of the sea's abundant wildlife, "including about a bazillion silversides and a few eels," but there were split impressions of Red Sail Sports, one of the companies that sponsors dive expeditions. One traveler says the staff was late and didn't properly prepare them for the trip. Another traveler commends them for doing a great job. Obviously, you should shop around before booking your dive; other popular expedition companies include the Native Divers Aruba, and the Mermaid Dive Center.
Sponsored dive packages tend to be moderate to expensive. The cost varies based on your scuba experience, equipment rental and allotted time.
