| About these ratings | ||
Central Pest's Hungarian State Opera House has been an institution in Budapest since its opening in 1884. Designed in a neo-Renaissance style, the Opera House holds more than 1,200 seats and has a reputation for exceptional acoustics. Even if you don't have time to catch an actual opera, visit the opera house just to marvel at its opulent architecture—inside and out. Marble columns, gilded vaulted ceilings, an enormous bronze chandelier, and murals and frescoes depicting Greek mythological scenes provide a romantic setting for a seated show or a walking tour.
You can take a guided tour any day from 3 to 4 p.m. for 2,900 HUF (about $13 USD), but most visitors choose to just admire the beauty of the building on their own (which you can do for free). Opera season lasts from September through June. You can also see performances by the Hungarian National Ballet here. For more information on the Opera House, check out its website.
