| About these ratings | ||
When you're itching to return to modern times, head to Zamalek, an upscale neighborhood situated on an island in the Nile River. During the 19th century, this was the area of choice for British ex-pats looking to settle down in Cairo. What were once lavish Victorian mansions are now embassies, galleries, and trendy boutiques. Here, you can unwind with a cup of fragrant tea and a couple puffs of hookah as you watch the felucca boats float by. You'll also discover a treasure trove of ethnic eateries and quite a few entertainment options, including the renowned Cairo Opera House.
According to one TripAdvisor user, Zamalek is "great for walking and enjoying a sip of coffee with friends over the Nile." However, others note that the boisterous crowds and treacherous traffic often disrupts the peaceful atmosphere.
Zamalek (also referred to as Gezira Island) is located in the heart of Cairo. You can reach Zamalek by by taxi from anywhere in the city or by Metro via the Gezira stop.
