|About these ratings|
After a few days exploring Charleston's historic sites, take some time to kick back, relax and enjoy the Southern sun. Overlooking the Atlantic from the West Islands -- 12 miles south of downtown Charleston -- this massive stretch of coastline makes for a great day trip away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Come here for the nature and the surfing, or head to the pier to sit and fish. Folly Beach's friendly atmosphere also attracts families looking to get some chow. But if you're hoping to lay claim to some fine beach real estate, you better get here early.
Folly Beach has undergone a face-lift over the past year. Visitors no longer describe the sand as dirty, and many say that the variety of seashells found here can make a walk along the water comparable to a treasure hunt. "So many seashells to see while walking on the beach made for a nice walk for my husband and I. We even saw some star fish laying on the beach," writes one TripAdvisor user. "After our walk, we went on the Fishing Pier and I would definitely recommend doing that." As for parking, visitors say that as long as you remember to feed the meter ($1 an hour), you'll be safe from any tickets, which had been a problem for beach-goers in the past.
While it's free to lounge on the beach, be prepared for rather steep parking fees. For more information, check out Folly Beach's website.
