|About these ratings|
If you're planning to spend most of your time diving or snorkeling, then consider spending an evening at Reef Teach. Though starting your vacation in a classroom may sound less than thrilling, being able to understand the amazing flora and fauna you'll encounter on your underwater explorations will only enhance the experience. Taught by marine biologists and conservationists, this two-hour presentation offers a crash course in the fish, coral and other animals that call the reef home. But it's not just a lecture — you'll have the chance to see corals and other specimens commonly found along the reef that you couldn't normally disturb in the wild. Teachers also offer safety tips (including how to avoid seasickness), and information about current dangers threatening reef conservation efforts.
Recent visitors say the presentation is an essential introduction. As one TripAdvisor user says, "This course made a huge difference in what I was able to recognize and experience while snorkeling on the reef the next day." Reviewers also gush about the staff, describing the teachers as passionate, informative and funny.
You'll find Reef Teach on the mainland in central Cairns. Presentations are offered Tuesday through Saturday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Adult admission costs $18 AUD (about $17 USD); children ages 14 and under can attend for $9 AUD (about $8.50 USD); and families with two adults and two children can learn together for $45 AUD (about $42 USD). You can pay at the door, or you can guarantee a spot by calling or emailing ahead of time. For more information, visit the Reef Teach website.
