| About these ratings | ||
The Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett honored it in song, which could be reason alone to honor it with your presence. Waimea Bay is well-known as a surfer's haven. But a word of caution: Don't attempt to ride one of Waimea's 30-foot waves or jump off the big rock that juts out of its shoreline unless you really know what you're doing.
Waimea's high tide lasts all winter long. But come summertime, calm waters beckon to swimmers, snorkelers, and bodysurfers. Only one thing remains constant: Parking is a nightmare no matter what time of year you visit. To avoid having to cut your visit short, pack a picnic—the beach has plenty of restrooms and showers, but no food stands or restaurants within walking distance. If you're planning a surf vacation to Waimea, check out U.S. News' guide on Honolulu and Oahu's Best Hotels to learn about your options for where to stay.
Waimea is off Kamehameha Highway, near the town of Hale'iwa, Oahu.
