Playa del Carmen Hotel Guide
The rates on a hotel in Playa proper have stayed affordable while those at other Riviera Maya resorts have spiked. Here you'll get a little of the beach (all accommodations are within walking distance), as well as a taste of the activity along La Quinta. But be forewarned: This is not the location for a quiet beach getaway. The bars along the beach or La Quinta will stay jumping to the early hours. If you want more restful sleep, then look for lodging in Playacar.
- Don't hesitate to book a place that's not on the beach. Town life here is much of the fun, and staying on the beach in Playa has its disadvantages -- in particular, the noise from the couple of beach bars." -- Frommer's
Playacar
This planned hotel community has swallowed up much of the resort and all-inclusive market in this area, and you can anticipate the rates will reflect that. You'll sacrifice what some call "authentic" Playa del Carmen if you stay here, and you'll be at the mercy of hotel shuttles and taxis to get to most of the top sites.
- These resorts are generally secluded, and prevent one from experiencing the sights, sounds and tastes of the city, and to some extent Mexican culture as well, since you will be surrounded by Western tourists and amenities." -- Wikitravel
