U.S. News Review

This Gaslamp Quarter hotel gets praise for its trendy ambiance — guest rooms and common areas feature stylized furnishings and contemporary art work, and the general atmosphere of the hotel says "swanky." With that said, some recent travelers say the Andaz San Diego is more about partying than about relaxing. Guests warn against a weekend stay — Thursday through Saturday evenings, the Andaz's lounge, RoofTop600, is swallowed by loud music and mingling social butterflies. But during the rest of the week, travelers say a stay here isn't half bad. The comfortable guest rooms contain complimentary snacks and cable TV, and the on-site pool earns high praise.

Critic Reviews

Fodor's

“Rooms have glass-enclosed baths, walnut floors, and perks such as complimentary sodas and snacks from the minibar. The hotel is known for its nightlife — even Prince Harry partied here when he was in town.”
Award: Fodor's Choice

Frommer's

“The city's largest rooftop lounge offers a pool, stellar downtown views, eats and drinks, comfy day beds, and private cabanas; on weekend nights the area morphs into RoofTop600, a high-energy, DJ-driven party scene with bottle service.”
Award: Frommer's Highly Recommended

Oyster.com

“This 159-room boutique is one of the sleekest hotels in the Gaslamp Quarter, with a popular rooftop lounge and a sexy wine bar.”

Travel + Leisure

“At the touch of a button, a glass partition that separates the 1,275-foot Star Suite from a humongous shower turns clear or opaque, connecting the showering experience with the rest of the bedroom.”

Condé Nast Traveler

“While the leather-bound lobby and erotic specialty suites (with group showers and stripper poles, for example) draw most of the notice, the voyeuristic vibe is really built around more subtle features at the Andaz (originally the Ivy Hotel). From the overstuffed beds made up with Thai linens, one has the option of gawking at a giant TV or your companion voguing in the translucent shower cube.”
