Our Take: As a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, Graycliff offers a unique experience, distinguished from its Nassau counterparts. This 18th-century colonial mansion comprises only 20 antique-filled rooms, each differentiated by historic names instead of room numbers. Despite its mature décor, rooms do come with 21st century amenities, like air conditioning, a private bath (some rooms even have Jacuzzis), and cable TV. To get a taste of Graycliff's far-reaching heritage, opt to bed down in the Pool Cottage, where Winston Churchill once slept. Though the rooms may not appeal to all visitors, recent guests exalt the hotel's ancestral commitment, and praise its ability to create a less touristy atmosphere. Graycliff also boasts two on-site pools and a five-star restaurant of the same name. What's even more unique is that the hotel offers cigar rolling lessons and tastings at its own cigar company, certified organic Graycliff Coffee, and Graycliff Chocolate.
