Our Take: Standing over the cobblestone streets of Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial, this historic hotel occupies the former home of Santo Domingo's founder, Governor Nicolas de Ovando. The building—a UNESCO World Heritage site—features historical décor like stucco walls and wrought iron accents. Rooms are spacious with high ceilings, four-poster beds, satellite TVs, and mini-bars. When you're not snoozing or out exploring the city, guests recommend that you seek respite from the heat by the outdoor pool or enjoy a glass of wine on the Spanish-style patio. Hostal Nicolas de Ovando also boasts the La Residence restaurant, although recent visitors suggest dining elsewhere, citing expensive eats and lackluster service as the resort's only shortcomings. Members of the Accor brand's Le Club loyalty program can earn and redeem points here.
