Our Take: Perfectly situated in the heart of Carmel, Calif., and just a 15-minute walk to Carmel Beach, L'Auberge Carmel, a Relais & Chateaux hotel, charms guests with its intimate luxury. Managing only 20 rooms, the hotel staff takes good care of its visitors, offering valet parking, room service, and a reportedly helpful front desk. The on-site restaurant Aubergine woos diners with wine-paired courses made from local ingredients. A few recent guests do confess that the expensive price tag detracts from the hotel's overall appeal, however.
