U.S. News Review

This charming boutique midtown Manhattan hotel receives high praise from recent guests for its accommodating staff, fanciful decor and unique theme — the 10 major classifications of the Dewey Decimal System. Each of the hotel's 10 floors tastefully exhibits one of these categories from literature to technology to philosophy. The cozy accommodations also come with classic amenities, like iHome alarm clocks, Gilchrist & Soames bath products, plush robes and slippers (not to mention iconic Manhattan skyline views, in some suites). Additional amenities include complimentary breakfast, cheese and wine each evening, and free wireless Internet access — all much-appreciated perks according to previous visitors. Although some travelers describe the accommodations as slightly compact, even by New York standards, most cite a very pleasant stay overall thanks to the hotel's inviting atmosphere and prime location.

Critic Reviews

New York Magazine

“The literary theme continues in the rooms, named according to the Dewey Decimal Classification, with headings like Languages, Math and Science or Literature. Inside are books to match, and the photographs above the headboards reflect the category, too: famous people in the Biography Rooms, ancient Greeks in Philosophy. The décor is your standard modern beige-and-sage, though the polished granite desks stand out.”

Fodor's

“Bookishly handsome, this stately landmark brownstone, built in 1900, is inspired by the nearby New York Public Library — each of its 10 floors is dedicated to one of the 10 categories of the Dewey Decimal System and is stocked with art and books relevant to a subtopic such as erotica, astronomy, or biography — let your interests guide your choice."”

Oyster.com

“A homey, 60-room, literary-themed boutique, the Library Hotel is located down the block from New York's famous Public Library, and among Midtown East's corporate skyscrapers. It's one of New York's best values, mostly because of the perks: an upscale bistro on the ground floor, a lively bar on the penthouse floor, free Wi-Fi, free gym passes, and free daily pastries, wine, and cheese.”

Travel + Leisure

“The covered rooftop — a popular happy-hour spot — has bars for all seasons: the Poetry Garden, with orchids, wicker chairs, and a greenhouse roof; and the Writer's Den, a cozy space with chocolate-colored sofas and a fireplace.”

Condé Nast Traveler

“This 10-storey mansion-style hotel, named after the nearby New York Public Library, is themed around books. Go to the 7th floor to read up on fashion, design and architecture or the 8th for poetry and literature.”
