Our Take: The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is one of the more historic properties on the Big Island. In the 1960s, the site was hand-picked by Laurance S. Rockefeller for its beautiful crescent-shaped shoreline. Although most of the original architecture was battered in 2006 by earthquake aftershocks, the modern and sweeping redesign lends a sense of fresh and airy luxury to the hotel. Each of the 258 rooms comes with loads of space for you to spread out, including your very own lanai (Hawaiian for "veranda") off of the bedroom.
