U.S. News Review

Opened in 1901, the Moana Surfrider was the first hotel to grace Waikiki's shores. And though the rooms here may be smaller than you'd find at other area hotels, this hotel hasn't lost its touch when it comes to pleasing Honolulu visitors. Previous guests describe this Westin-affiliated hotel as charming and are pleased to find that the accommodations house everything you'd expect from a Starwood property, including Westin's signature Heavenly beds, flat-screen TVs and, in some cases, private balconies. (If not having your own private balcony is a deal-breaker, be sure to request a room in the Tower Wing.) Though many claim to have enjoyed their stay here, recent travelers are quick to gripe about Moana Surfrider's high room rates; however, members of the Starwood Preferred Guest rewards program can use points to cover the tab. Plus, the cost of this hotel covers access to live hula performances and the on-site pool (which travelers particularly love). And for an additional fee, you can indulge in spa treatments at the Moana Lani Spa or top-notch cuisine and beverages at one of four restaurants and bars.

Critic Reviews

“The refurbished Surfrider has oceanfront suites with two separate lanai, one for sunrise and another for sunset viewing.”

“This is Waikiki's oldest hotel, built in 1901. Even after more than 100 years, multiple renovations, and the construction of two towers in the '50s and '60s, the hotel has managed to retain its original and still-grand Beaux Arts main building. ”
Award: Frommer's Highly Recommended

“Small rooms are offset by impressive public spaces, including an outdoor courtyard with live nightly music beneath a sweeping banyan tree, and an enormous spa and fitness center.”

Travel + Leisure

“Meticulously restored 1901 Beaux-Arts property — the first hotel on Waikiki Beach — with an Old Hawaii vibe (afternoon tea is de rigueur), plus one of Waikiki's only beachfront spas. ”

Condé Nast Traveler

“This Hawaiian paradise has a porch that beckons guests out of their rooms—but not much further. The hotel is one of Waikiki's most historic, having opened in 1901; despite renovations and rebranding, it has maintained its classic appeal. ”
