Our Take: The grounds, porticos, gazebos and rose hedges of this small luxury hotel can make quite the impression on any romantic traveler. As can the Monmouth Plantation's elegant 1818 Restaurant, which claims to be "the only true Antebellum dining experience in all of Natchez." But there are a handful of guests who think the hotel's carpets and furnishings haven't withstood the test of time, particularly considering the lofty prices you'll pay to stay in one of the plantation's rooms or suites. The hospitality staff gets top marks, however, particularly the bellmen and bartenders. You'll find this four-star hotel on Melrose Avenue, close to Natchez's Liberty Shopping Center. Natchez is a three and a half hour drive northwest of Biloxi.
