U.S. News Review

The Palace Hotel first welcomed guests in 1875 as the world's largest and most luxurious hotel. But the earthquake of 1906 destroyed the property; the building that stands now was constructed in 1909. Still San Francisco's Grande Dame, the Palace wins guests over with its historic charm: The lobby draws attention with marble floors and high ceilings, and the guest rooms house period furnishings (alongside amenities such as high-speed Internet access). But to truly experience the Palace in all its timeless glory, sit down to afternoon tea underneath the glass ceiling and crystal chandeliers of the Garden Court. (For dinner, head to the Pied Piper Bar & Grill, which serves traditional American fare.) Although visitors appreciate the Palace's past, some say that the decor in the rooms is starting to feel tired and that the hotel would benefit from a facelift. The on-site fitness center and pool, on the other hand, receive a thumbs-up from guests. A member of the Luxury Collection hotel family, the Palace gladly welcomes guests looking to pay with or earn rewards through the Starwood Preferred Guest program.

Critic Reviews

Frommer's

“For a historic hotel, the rooms are a good size (even the least expensive standard rooms have enough space for a comfy chair to relax in and a desk set).”

Lonely Planet

“The 1906 landmark Palace stands as a monument to turn-of-the-century grandeur, aglow with 100-year-old Austrian crystal chandeliers. Cushy (if staid) accommodations cater to expense-account travelers but prices drop on weekends.”
