Our Take: Built in 1889, the Pine Inn was the first hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif., and it has maintained a high standard of luxury every since. Visitors love its location on the city's major thoroughfare, Ocean Avenue, which allows them to reach the beach and local shops within minutes on foot. Although some guests complain that the furnishings are tired and old-fashioned, they do describe the beds as comfortable. The on-site Il Fornaio Restaurant also receives good reviews from diners.
