U.S. News Review

Perched on the volcanic cliffs of Keauhou Bay on the western shores of the Big Island, the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa offers beautiful views and some great amenities for kids. Little ones will enjoy the activities offered in the Keiki area, while teens can meet and greet at the Club Le'ale' teen lounge. This Sheraton property also boasts a sand-bottom children's pool and invites kids and their parents to listen in on manta ray presentations (offered in the evenings Monday through Saturday). For a little more excitement, bring the whole family to the Haleo Luau dinner and show, which takes place every Monday. Aside from the wealth of kids activities, previous guests say there's not much to recommend about the Sheraton Kona Resort. Accommodations are fairly standard in terms of decor, offering private balconies, flat-panel TVs and Sheraton's signature Sweet Sleeper beds. However, many previous guests note that the Wi-Fi service here is spotty at best. On the other hand, you can gain free access to the Internet if you're a member of the Starwood Preferred Guest rewards club.

Critic Reviews

Fodor's

“Those traveling with kids appreciate the pool, one of the coolest on the island, with a slide, waterfalls, and an ocean view. Culture vultures like the historic walking tour with the resort's cultural liaison. A luau, on a grassy lawn with a backdrop of coconut trees, features a live Polynesian show.”

Travel + Leisure

“If you opt for an oceanfront room, request a view of the manta rays; after dark, spotlights illuminate the water so you can watch them swim.”

Oyster.com

“The ... 509-room Sheraton may be lacking an on-site beach (it's a five-minute drive to the Kahaluu Beach Park), but prices are affordable and the south Kailua-Kona location is convenient.”

Smarter Travel

“Every night after sunset, a dinner-theater show happens just offshore Hawaii's Kona Coast. Microscopic plankton rise toward the ocean surface to set the scene. Charter companies bring underwater lights to illuminate the main dish and attract more. Onlookers adjust their masks, snorkels, and cameras then wait for the action. From out of the darkness, almost on cue, as many as 12 manta rays, some with wingspans of more than 15 feet wide, swoop in to feast on one of their favorites.”
