Our Take: During Derby seasons of yore, celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Crawford, and Eva Marie Saint would tuck in at this gorgeous, 293-room Louisville landmark. And there's something about the ornate lobby and elegant rooms and suites that feels like its drawing inspiration on the glamour of Hollywoodland. Some recent visitors interpret that nostalgic vibe negatively, however. The room service is just a little too slow, the furniture and amenities are a little stale, and the location (downtown on Broadway) is just a little too far from the top sites. If modernity is your thing, consider the boutique-y 21c Museum Hotel.
