Our Take: The son of Ulysses S. Grant (general of the Union army in the Civil War and the 18th president of the United States) opened this hotel in 1910 on Broadway in the downtown area. For a while, it held the favor of socialites, but then its popularity waned, necessitating a massive, half-billion-dollar renovation in 2005 and 2006. Today, The US GRANT gives guests old-world glamour with modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, Italian linens, and a piece of original abstract art in each guestroom. However, this Starwood Luxury Collection property probably isn't the ideal hotel for sun-seekers, since it's pretty far from San Diego's most popular beaches. On the other hand, if you're a Starwood Preferred Guest looking to redeem or accrue reward points, this could be the place for you.
