Our Take: The White Elephant has been a favorite of Nantucket's bluebloods since the 1920s. Exactly how ritzy is it? Well, visitors are welcome to dock their yachts out front, and the Brant Point Grill is the see-and-be-seen spot for lunch. But this local favorite is convenient for tourists too; it's half a mile from downtown Nantucket and an ideal hub for travelers visiting without a car. Recent guests rave about the first-rate service—the staff has a habit of greeting visitors by name. And the small cottages, complete with plush bedding and working fireplaces (in some rooms), receive high praise from families and other large parties. However, a few previous visitors do say they expected more from their accommodations, given the exorbitant room rates. The White Elephant is a seasonal property, open from mid-April to October and Thursday to Sunday in November.
