Our Take: This landmark hotel in the Near North—just a block from the Magnificent Mile—offers a taste of European elegance in the midst of Chicago's windy bustle. Guests particularly love the Whitehall's demure sophistication, which emanates from its antique furniture and abundance of artwork. However, bear in mind that because this is an older property, guestrooms tend to be smaller than some of the Whitehall's competitors. Guests also say that the renovations, though much needed, disrupt a smooth check-in process. However, recent visitors assure that the on-site restaurant (Fornetto Mei) and friendly service staff (the doormen, especially) make up for the Whitehall's slightly claustrophobic feel.
