| About these ratings | ||
The main event at Phillip Island is the penguin parade, and boy, do people go gaga over these feathery fowl. One Concierge.com user says, "Basically hundreds (maybe thousands) of tiny penguins hop out of the ocean every night at sunset and march from the beach to their inland homes—it is incredibly adorable." You can watch the spectacle from special viewing platforms or, for a little extra cash, with a tour guide on a secluded stretch of sand. For more information on booking a naturalist, check out the natural park's website.
One VirtualTourist user says a guided penguin tour is well worth your time and money, saying, "These private groups are kept small […] and you get front row seats to the amazing sight of Fairy penguins emerging from the sea."
Phillip Island is located just off the coast from Melbourne, but the car or bus ride to get there takes about 90 minutes. And to reach the penguins, you must travel about 30 minutes more.
