About these ratings

The Werribee Open Range Zoo differs from the Melbourne Zoo in that it offers an African safari-like experience. Although you can walk around and see some animals, the best part comes when you jump on the safari vehicle and drive among giraffes, zebras, hippos, bison, and more. Don't forget your camera.

If you're deciding between the Melbourne Zoo and the Werribee Open Range Zoo, many visitors recommend the Werribee even though it's a little farther from the city center. One TripAdvisor user says, "I'll never forget seeing a rhino in FULL GALLOP take on one of the pickup trucks working on the site. You'll never see that in another zoo in your life."

Werribee is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, but the last safari departs at 3:30 p.m. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, kids from ages four to 15 get into the zoo for free. Kids age three and under always always receive free admission. During the week, kids are charged $12.60 AUD (roughly $12.60 USD). Adult admission is $25.40 AUD every day. Werribee is located just west of the city center and is accessible via the train's Royal Park Station. For more information, visit the website.
