Not up for spending an hour underground in the Catacombs? Visit the Père-Lachaise Cemetery instead. Covering nearly 120 acres of the 20ème arrondissement (district), is one of the world's most famous burial grouds: Everyone from Molière to Jim Morrison and Honoré de Balzac to Gertrude Stein can be found here here. But if you don't feel like paying your respects to anyone in particular, you might enjoy the peaceful walk through the leafy grounds.
Père-Lachaise is open daily during business hours, with slight variations in the winter season and over holidays. And although admission is free, travelers and experts both recommend buying a map (outside the entrance on Boulevard de Ménilmontant). Some visitors also suggest taking a guided tour—OuiParis Tours will accompany you to the most popular graves sites while providing some key facts about the area. Tours run every day and cost €20 EUR (around $26 USD) for adults and €15 EUR (roughly $20 USD) for students; children 10 and under can tag along for free.
