| About these ratings | ||
A quick three miles from the Roman city center, the countryside town of Tivoli is known best for the Villa Adriana and the Villa d'Este. The former Emperor Hadrian used Villa Adriana as his country getaway. But it's massive, so make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Villa d'Este is a Renaissance manor house, commissioned in the 16th century by a Roman Catholic cardinal, and known for its ornate house and highly manicured grounds.
Although it might be tempting to think you can walk from Rome to Tivoli, travel writers say not to. Take urban bus #4 instead, and save your energy for walking the massive villas.
