|About these ratings|
Boasting 5,289 skiable acres, a vertical drop of 3,450 feet and 31 lifts, the Vail Ski Resort is massive. And Vail's 193 trails cater to a wide variety of skiers, with well-tended slopes for novices and rugged runs for experts. But what's even more impressive is that all of this primo powder is found on one mountain, making this the largest single-mountain resort in the country. Frommer's writes, "America's top ski resort by practically any standard, Vail is something that all serious skiers must experience at least once."
Most recent skiers agree with Frommer's, particularly praising Vail's size and quality runs. "The mountain is vast and a variety of terrains is mind blowing," one visitor tells TripAdvisor. "You can easily spend a week there and never ride the same trail again."
Previous visitors also recommend a summer visit to stroll the resort's hiking paths or to take a gondola ride to Vail Mountain's summit. Located just south of town along I-70, Vail Ski Resort's slopes are open between mid-November and late April. The lifts operate between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., although hours are often extended during the course of the season. Three-day lift tickets range from $186 to $279 for adults, depending on the time of year. Lift tickets purchased at this resort are also valid at Beaver Creek.
