Several centuries ago, if you wanted to cross the Grand Canal, a bridge located here was the only way. Now there are other options. The bridge's current incarnation is the handiwork of Antonio da Ponte, who finished work on it in the early 1590s. Many travelers enjoy the Grand Canal photo opportunity on the Ponte di Rialto, while others enjoy the shopping found on either side of it. Others still enjoy parking themselves at a café and gazing at it from afar.
