Home to America's millionaires and billionaires (Donald Trump, Jimmy Buffett, Tiger Woods and Mark Zuckerberg -- to name a few) for nearly a century, West Palm Beach provides the most luxurious version of the relaxing Floridian lifestyle. Or so people think. Its actually Palm Beach -- the coastal neighborhood adjacent to West Palm -- that serves as the spot where these moguls and celebrities choose to build their waterfront winter homes. Its younger sister, West Palm, was ... continue»

When to Visit West Palm Beach

The best times to visit West Palm Beach are April and May. You'll be greeted by warm 70s and 80s and non-peak prices. Families will flood the area in the summer, while hurricanes may follow in the fall.  Winter is spectacular, but you'll be competing against celebs like Serena Williams for a table at the local dinner spot. Demand rises and so do hotel rates.

Getting Around West Palm Beach

West Palm Beach Neighborhoods

West Palm Beach's eastern shore is lined with miles of shoreline, pristinely kept and dotted with palm trees. Although it's a coastal city, West Palm is best known for its museums and historic homes. The northern beaches are best for watersports, but visitors should head to Palm Beach for outdoor activities.

Downtown

Downtown West Palm Beach in the middle of the city is where most hotels, restaurants and attractions are located. Nightlife is also centered here in the Clematis Street Historic District, a part of downtown filled with bars and restaurants. CityPlace, a few blocks south, is home to performance venues for culture hounds who want to catch an evening show.

Flamingo Park

South of downtown is Flamingo Park, an area that was once a pineapple plantation and is rising again in affluence and real estate value. The Armory Arts Center nestles in this area, surrounded by Mediterranean- and mission-style homes. Slightly southwest is the historic neighborhood of El Cid, also known for its many Mediterranean-style homes.

Mango Promenade

Just to the east of Flamingo Park and south of downtown West Palm is Mango Promenade. The well-regarded Norton Museum of Art sits in this neighborhood just to the south of the Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Northwest

The Northwest started as the city's segregated black community in the mid-1900s; now, visitors can check out a variety of architectural styles, from Bahamian to bungalow-style homes. Notable historic buildings, including the Gwen Cherry House and the Alice Frederick Mickens House, are located here.

Grandview Heights

Grandview Heights, located just south of downtown, could be described as a mini West Palm Beach, as it was originally created to house the construction workers building the area's hotels. It's is therefore one of the city's oldest intact districts -- and it's only recently become popular again for its compilation of Mediterranean-style homes.

The best way to get around West Palm Beach is by car. Whether you rent one or use your own, a car is necessary to enjoy the city's sites. Taxicabs are also an option, but, due to the distance between destinations, they can be prohibitively expensive. Located less than five miles southwest of downtown, West Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) hosts several rental car companies.
