Printers used ink balls made of wood, wool and sheep skin to blot the type with ink before running it through the press. It took about an hour to print one book page and six to eight hours to print one newspaper page. Historians estimate there were 300 to 1,000 subscribers to the weekly newspaper the Virginia Gazette. About 1,500 original copies of the Gazette published before 1780 still exist today.
