| About these ratings | ||
North of Old Faithful and southwest of the Norris Geyser Basin is the Lower Geyser Basin. What sets this 12-square-mile geothermic area apart from the others is that its features are filled with mud rather than water. Take a stroll around the belching Fountain Paint Pots, which earned their name from the colors produced by the mud's high acidity levels. You should also check out the Great Fountain Geyser, whose eruptions reach between 100 and 200 feet, causing steaming trickles of water to cascade down its terraces. Other areas worth exploring are the Queen's Laundry (a stream cool enough to swim in) and the constantly boiling Ojo Caliente pool.
Because the Lower Geyser Basin is more secluded than other main attractions, there are no facilities in the immediate area. The closest eateries are located several miles south at Old Faithful.
Check Yellowstone's website for specific opening and closing dates of facilities, plus operating hours.
