How it Ranks: Carnival Magic ranks #8 out of 24 Carnival Cruise Lines Cruise Ships based on an analysis of expert and user ratings, as well as health ratings.

Launched in 2011, Carnival Magic is Carnival's second Dream-class ship. Because of its sheer size (the ship can carry up to 3,690 passengers and 1,367 crew members), previous cruisers say the level of personalization is below par compared to smaller Carnival ships. Among its many superlatives, Magic is the world's first vessel to introduce a ropes course at sea. And on board, guests have access to numerous sports venues, including a mini-golf course, a volleyball court, and two swimming pools — not to mention the WaterWorks park, which features two waterslides and a splash park. Those looking to relax can book a treatment at the Cloud 9 Spa or soak in the whirlpools at the Serenity Adult Retreat. Travelers can also kick back in their cabins, which come appointed with flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars and 24-hour room service. While the 185- to 230-square-foot Interior and Ocean View category staterooms are more compact than the higher-end 220- to 430-square-foot Balcony and Suite category rooms, these lodging types cater to those on a budget. Aside from the well-kept staterooms, past cruisers compliment the ship's versatile dining venues. Passengers can pick from eight restaurants, including the main dining rooms, the Lido Marketplace and RedFrog Pub. But with that in mind, previous guests say the cuisine and high-quality service at Prime Steakhouse (for an extra $35 per person charge) is worth the splurge.

Disclaimers about ship ratings: A ship's Health Rating is based on vessel inspection scores published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship's Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. All ship Traveler Ratings are based on ratings provided under license by Cruiseline.com.
