How it Ranks: Carnival Spirit ranks #6 out of 24 Carnival Cruise Lines Cruise Ships based on an analysis of expert and user ratings, as well as health ratings.

Currently based in Sydney (trips must be booked on the Carnival Australia website), Carnival Spirit carries up to 2,124 passengers on sailings around the South Pacific. Inaugurated in 2001, Carnival Spirit offers a higher level of customization than larger vessels within the fleet thanks to a low 1-to-2 crew-to-passenger ratio that enables the ship's staff to cater more closely to passengers' needs. Cabins aboard the Spirit, however, are the same as those found on most Carnival ships: Cruisers can choose from Interior, Ocean View, Balcony or Suite staterooms, all of which come with flat-screen TVs and minifridges. When guests aren't unwinding in their cabins, they can venture to 16 bars and lounges, including a dance club, wine bar, jazz club and a piano bar. For the younger set, the ship features children's programming through organized and counselor-supervised clubs (for ages 2 to 17). Spirit is also home to four pools and Green Thunder, the world's largest and steepest waterslide at sea. For more adventurous pursuits, guests can head to City Sports Park, which features mini-golf, pingpong tables and shuffleboard. Though there are only four restaurants onboard, the food and service aboard Spirit earns high praise among past cruisers and critics. The Lido Restaurant offers pizza, Asian dishes, a New York-style deli and a dessert area. Meanwhile, Jimmy's C-Side BBQ offers a laid-back poolside station where passengers can dig into char-grilled barbecue favorites. Lastly, the main dining room offers typical Carnival menu offerings, like Caesar salads and grilled fish, while the Nouveau Steakhouse (an additional $35 per person) plates seafood and steak entrees and is lauded by past cruisers for its tasty dishes.

Disclaimers about ship ratings: A ship's Health Rating is based on vessel inspection scores published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship's Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. All ship Traveler Ratings are based on ratings provided under license by Cruiseline.com.
