Membership Levels

The Starwood Preferred Guest program is divided into three tiers: Preferred Guest, Gold Preferred Guest and Platinum Preferred Guest.

Preferred Guest

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free nights
  • Member discounts

You can become a Starwood Preferred Guest by registering for membership on the program's website or at any participating hotel. As a Preferred Guest, you will earn two Starpoints for every dollar spent at any participating Starwood hotel. All SPG program members are eligible to receive a 35 percent discount on room rates at participating hotels in North and Latin America. Also, when you redeem points for four nights at a Category 3 or higher property, you'll receive your fifth consecutive night free. As a Preferred Guest, you'll have access to these benefits, and you can trade in your points for room upgrades, free nights, merchandise and event tickets. You can also put your Starpoints towards flight tickets on 150-plus airlines thanks to the SPG Flights program. In order to maintain your membership, you must take advantage of the program at least once a year.

Gold Preferred Guest

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free nights
  • Priority check-in/out
  • Free amenities
  • Member discounts

If you stay at a Starwood property 10 times (or 25 nights) within a calendar year, you will be upgraded to Gold status. As a Gold Preferred Guest, you'll earn three Starpoints for every dollar spent in a Starwood hotel. You'll also receive welcome gifts at check-in (usually your choice between free points, complimentary Internet access or a complimentary beverage) and late checkout times. You'll also have the ability to earn Starpoints on qualifying Delta flights — and SkyMiles on eligible hotel stays — through the Crossover Rewards partnership between Starwood and Delta Air Lines. In order to keep your Gold status, you must continue to stay at Starwood hotels at least 10 times (or 25 nights) each year; if you rack up a total of 250 nights or maintain your status for five consecutive years, you'll be a Gold Preferred Guest for good.

Platinum Preferred Guest

Benefits include:

  • Ability to earn and use points
  • Free nights
  • Free room upgrades
  • Priority check-in/out
  • Free amenities
  • Member discounts

If you stay a total of 25 times (or 50 nights) within a calendar year, you'll become a Platinum member with access to complimentary Internet, late checkout times, free room upgrades and executive lounge entry (depending on availability). You will also continue to earn both Starpoints and Delta Skymiles on eligible stays and flights through the Crossover Rewards program. Plus, the more nights you stay as a Platinum member, the more extras you'll receive. Stay 75 nights in a year and your rewards earnings will increase to four points per dollar spent, and you won't have to adhere to scheduled check-in and checkout times; stay 100 nights and you'll receive personalized concierge service. You can never lose your Platinum status once you've visited a total of 500 nights and held Platinum status for 10 years.
