About these ratings

Points

Starwood rewards, known as Starpoints, can be earned and used at more than 1,100 hotels around the world. You can also earn Starpoints on everyday purchases using the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card from American Express.

Earning Points

Starwood's Preferred Guest program is fairly straightforward: the more nights you spend at participating hotels, the faster you'll earn a free night. You'll earn two Starpoints for every dollar you spend at Westin, St. Regis, W, Sheraton, Le Méridien, Luxury Collection, Aloft, Element or Four Points by Sheraton hotel — that includes money spent dining in hotel restaurants, getting treatments at the on-site spa and using pay-for-data services like Internet access or in-room movie rentals. You can also earn one Starpoint for every dollar you spend on everyday purchases if you sign up for the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card from American Express. Additionally, you can collect up to five Starpoints per dollar applied to stays and other expenses at participating SPG properties with the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card from American Express. Plus, if you're an elite SPG member and a Medallion-level member of the Delta SkyMiles program, you can earn Starpoints on qualifying Delta flights. Should your accumulated points fall short of the amount you need, you can buy additional points through the Starwood Preferred Guest website.

Using Points

You can use the points you've accrued to cover the cost of your hotel room, upgrade your hotel room or pay for additional hotel expenses at any of Starwood's nine brands. The number of points needed to cover the cost of a night's stay depends on the hotel and room type. Below are the numbers of points needed for one free night in a selection of popular business and leisure destinations:

Basic members may redeem Starpoints for flights through the SPG Flights program; if you're a Gold or Platinum member, you can earn Starpoints on eligible Delta flights (and Delta SkyMiles rewards on eligible hotel stays) through the Crossover Rewards program. Starpoints can also be transferred to Amtrak Guest Rewards for train travel. Additional redemption options include tickets to sporting, theater and music events; merchandise from partner companies like Starbucks, Gap, Amazon and Williams Sonoma; and charitable donations.
