Best Times to Visit Aix-en-Provence

The best times to visit Aix-en-Provence are from March to May and September through November, when the weather is as moderate as the crowds. The summer months see an influx of Parisians and international travelers escaping to the south of France, so hotel and restaurant availability is scant and prices soar. Cost-wise, December to February is the best time to visit; many hotels offer lower rates since it's the low season. However, some hotels may shutter their doors during the quiet months, so be sure to call ahead to confirm they're open.

September-November

Visit in the fall, and you'll enjoy average temperatures that range from 40 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The tourist crowds are not as thick, and you can also reap some goods from the olive and grape harvests.

Key Events:

December-February

Aix-en-Provence's southern location means wintertime temperatures hardly ever dip below freezing. Still, you'll need a coat since the temps range from the upper 30s to upper 50s. Although you'll miss out on a leafy Cours Mirabeau, you'll enjoy saving euros — hotels slash their rates by about 15 to 20 percent this time of year.

Key Events:

  • Ballet season (October-April)
  • Le Marché des 13 Desserts (December)

March-May

Spring ushers in temperatures ranging from 40 to 70 degrees, as well as blooming fields and greening trees. Plus, tourists don't really mob Aix until summer, so you'll enjoy your trip sans crowds.

Key Events:

  • Ballet season (October-April)
  • Children’s Carnival (March)
  • Aix en Musique (May-August)
  • Spring Crafts Fair (May)

June-August

In the summer, Parisians head south to Aix. In preparation for the onslaught, hotels raise their rates. Travelers this time of year will also find restaurants and hotels packed — and attractions, like the markets and Cours Mirabeau, clogged. But the weather is beautiful this time of year — temperatures range from the mid-60s to the 80s.

Key Events:

  • Aix en Musique (May-August)
  • Summer Crafts Fair (June)
  • Les Nuitées d’Aix (June)
