Best Times to Visit Argentine Patagonia

The best times to visit Argentine Patagonia are October through November (springtime in the southern hemisphere) and December through February (summertime). During these months, the weather is mild, and spectators can view natural attractions in their full splendor. You should make your spring and summer travel arrangements far in advance since visitors flock to Argentina for the optimal hiking conditions. Pack layers to combat Patagonia's heavy winds (especially if you're planning a visit to Southern Patagonia). January and February draw the largest crowds, but October, March and April are also good times for sightseeing, boasting sunshine and temperatures in the 40s, 50s and 60s.

June-September

With the glistening, snow-covered Andes slopes, Argentine Patagonia's winter season beckons to skiers. Meanwhile, wildlife enthusiasts crowd Atlantic Patagonia's shores with their eyes peeled for whales. Temperatures fall into the 20s and 30s, but lakeside towns still brim with tourists. Hotel rates are steep at this time of year, particularly in July. Although there are scattered rain showers, daytime weather is usually pleasant and sunny. You'll need to bundle up as breezy winds swell throughout the day. Also, keep in mind that Southern Patagonia is quiet this time of year, so confirm that attractions are open before you trek to them.

Key Events

October-November

Spring is beautiful in Argentina: The weather is mild with highs in the 50s, making an ideal atmosphere for exploration. Still, pack warm clothes as the southern regions maintain chillier temps and strong winds. Hotel rates are also reasonable at this time of year; however, if you plan to stay in Atlantic Patagonia, make your reservations as early as possible. Tourists tend to flock here for the sunshine and spectacular views.

Key Events

December- February

This is (understandably) the most popular time to visit Argentine Patagonia. The weather is warm (reaching into the 70s) and the region's attractions are ready for exploration. You'll want to make your reservations up to a year in advance to beat the swarms of tourists.

Key Events

March-May

As the summer crowds wane, hotel rates drop, making this a great time to score a deal. (But you should still make reservations several weeks in advance.) The weather is almost as pleasant as it is in summer with highs in the 60s. However, you should note that many attractions close this time of year to prepare for prime whale-watching season in June and July.
