Best Times to Visit Aspen

The best time to visit Aspen is from December to February. The town sparkles when it's buried under fresh powder, and its slopes are ready to be taken by storm. Keep in mind that this is the most popular time to visit, so prices will likely be elevated, but you can find some deals if you plan a few months in advance. Aspen's second high season occurs between June and August, with temperatures in the high 70s – the perfect atmosphere for a mountain hike. To save money, consider visiting in the spring or fall, making sure to plan a few weeks ahead to secure a hotel that's open in the offseason.

December-February

Winter is by far the most popular time to visit. Nearly 200 inches of annual snowfall helps lure winter sports aficionados from all across the country who are willing to brave the chilly Rocky Mountain air (average high temperatures hover in the mid-30s) for a taste of fresh powder. But this is also the most expensive time for an Aspen getaway; hotel prices skyrocket and lift tickets also cost a hefty amount. Visit in early January  when the holiday crowds have dispersed  or late February for manageable prices and optimal ski conditions. You can also cut costs by reserving your lift tickets and rental equipment in advance and by opting for a stay-and-ski package, offered by many area resorts. Because this season is so popular, you'll definitely want to book your accommodations at least three months to a year (if traveling around any holidays) in advance.

Key Events:

March-May

With temperatures ranging from the 20s to the low 60s, springtime in Aspen is short and not always sweet. In fact, March and April are typically the rainiest months of the year. And although prices plummet once the powder hounds leave, you'll discover that finding a hotel may be a challenge; some properties shut their doors for a few weeks before the arrival of the summer tourists.

Key Events:

June-August

Summer's warm weather (highs average in the mid- to high 70s) lead to a surge in tourism, with travelers hoping to take advantage of the prime conditions for outdoor activities like hiking, biking and golf. This season is also peppered with numerous culinary and cultural festivals. But as the number of visitors increases, so do the prices. To get the best available rates, reserve your lodging a few months in advance.

Key Events:

September-November

Autumn is another slow season for Aspen, and like they do in the spring, some of the hotels close up shop. However, prices are reasonable, and since you'll pretty much have the town to yourself, you won't have to worry about booking your hotel months in advance  two or three weeks should be sufficient. (You may even want to consider an apartment rental in this low season.) Meanwhile, high temperatures ranging from the low 40s the high 60s make manageable (albeit chilly) conditions for mountain hikes and downtown strolls.
