Located roughly 110 miles southeast of Auckland on a working sheep farm, the Hobbiton Movie Set is a must for fans of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" movies. It's the country's only set left from the films and features the movies' famous hobbit homes and The Green Dragon Inn, plus plenty of greenery.
Past travelers cautioned that though this attraction is well worth a visit (even for those who've never seen "The Lord of the Rings" movies), the property can feel a bit crowded at times. Others lamented the high tour fees.
To get to the Hobbiton Movie Set, visitors can drive or take a day tour. The on-site parking lot is free to use, and several tour operators offer combined bus transfers and ticket packages from Auckland. Basic tours for drivers cost 79 New Zealand dollars (about $57) for adults and NZ$39.50 (around $28.50) for children between 9 and 16. Tours with Auckland bus transfers start at NZ$149 (roughly $107) per person. Reputable tour companies include InterCity Tours and Bush and Beach. If you're planning a trip to the nearby Waitomo Glowworm Caves, consider booking a combined Hobbiton Movie Set and Waitomo Glowworm Caves tour, which typically includes round-trip transportation from Auckland, entrance fees and guided tours of both attractions, and lunch at the Hobbiton Movie Set. Public combined tours are available through GreatSights New Zealand Tours, while private combined tours are operated by TIME Unlimited Tours. Combined tour prices start at NZ$357 (approximately $257) for adults and NZ$178 (around $128) per child.
In addition to the property's iconic movie set structures, visitors can grab a drink at The Green Dragon Inn bar, dine at The Shires Rest Cafe and shop for souvenirs at the gift shop. Set tours are approximately two hours long and are available daily from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information, visit the Hobbiton Movie Set's website.
