Best Times to Visit Bar Harbor

The best time to visit Bar Harbor is from June to August. Because of the state's geographic location in the northernmost point in the U.S., Maine enjoys cool weather year-round. As such, the best time to explore the greater Bar Harbor area is when it will be the warmest and sunniest. Fall and spring are also fine times to visit if you don't mind chillier temperatures; there will certainly be far fewer people visiting Acadia National Park during these seasons. Winter is another option, but only if you love the cold. Not only will temperatures dip to the teens during this time, but the region will be blanketed with snow, making it more difficult to get around.

June-August

This is the only time of year when you'll get to experience Bar Harbor in consistent 70-degree weather. As such, it should come as no surprise that this is the most popular time to visit. Prepare to rub elbows with plenty of other visitors and understand that due to demand, travel rates may be higher than other times of the year. June daytime highs rest in the low 70s, while July and August see highs in the high 70s. If you want to plan a summer trip that dodges the peak seasonal crowds, consider visiting in early June. Though temperatures during the day may be pleasant, it's wise to bring layers because nighttime dips down to the high to low 50s throughout the season. And if you plan on going whale watching (the season runs from mid-April to September), bring your layers with you on the boat as the temperature is not only colder on the water but wind is more prevalent.

Key Events:

September-October

Once September hits, the summer rush that floods Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park will be gone, making it the perfect time to visit if you're hoping to avoid the crowds. However, because of the region's stunning fall foliage, the area still draws visitors. During September, expect highs in the 60s and lows in the high 40s. October certainly gets chillier, with daytime temperatures in the high 50s and lows in the low 40s. If you want to witness the whale migration that happens along the Maine coast, it's best to visit Bar Harbor during September, the tail end of the whale watching season.

Key Events:

November-March

A word to the wise: only come if you are able to embrace the truly frigid temperatures that pass through during this season. You'll certainly be rewarded with little to no fellow visitors and likely lower travel rates, but the cold does get intense. November is the warmest month of the bunch, with highs in the high 40s and lows in the low 30s. From December through February, you can expect highs in the low 30s and nighttime temps to dip down to the teens. The upside to this weather is that the area will be covered in powder. Certain areas of Acadia National Park remain open during the winter for activities, such as snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and more. March eases up with highs in the low 40s and lows in the mid-20s.

Key Events:

April-May

Surrounded by lush, forested landscapes, Bar Harbor comes alive again in the spring. Leaves on trees will be full and vibrantly green and you'll see wildflowers peppered throughout the region. What's more, it's the start of whale watching season come mid-April. However, because of Bar Harbor's location, spring will still be pretty chilly. During April, highs rest in the low 50s and lows hover in the low 30s, while May experiences a comfortable uptick with daytime highs in the low 60s and nighttime temps in the low 40s.
