Spain  #1 in Best Places to Visit in Spain

Best Times to Visit Barcelona

The best time to visit the Barcelona is from May to June when balmy temperatures in the low to mid-70s mesh with a flurry of festivals that trumpet the advent of summer. The actual summertime is sticky with humidity – locals leave their beloved city in droves to catch a breeze somewhere else. They come back for the fall when the average highs drop back into the 70s. Winter is mild compared to other Spanish destinations, with highs in the high 50s. And while coming during the spring may seem like smart idea for avoiding crowds, April sees frequent showers, which may put a literal damper on sightseeing plans (most of Barcelona's top attractions are experienced outside). Keep in mind that no matter what time of the year you'll visit, there will be tourist crowds: Barcelona is the most-visited city in Spain.

May-June

This short spring season is the ideal time to visit. Pleasant temperatures in the high 60s to mid-70s are accompanied by multiple carnivalesque festivals. Plus, you'll revel in knowing that you snuck in and enjoyed Barcelona before the summertime tourist rush.

Key Events:

  • Verbena de Sant Joan (June)
  • Sónar (June)

July-August

Summer constitutes the high tourist season; temperatures, humidity and prices (on everything from airfare to hotels) are also at their highest. You can expect highs to be in the low 80s, accompanied by humidity, and temperatures are notorious for not lowering a whole lot at night. As such, August sees tons of Catalans leaving for monthlong vacations in more temperate spots.

Key Events:

September-December

The tourist season slows and hotel rates fall a little bit during the fall, and average high temperatures are in the high to low 70s. You can still probably get away with a swim in the Mediterranean in September, but come October, with lows in the 50s, the water starts to become too cold for a dip. And although highs in October remain comfortable at 70 degrees on average, the month sees the most rain of any other month of the year. November to December also experience some rain and usher in highs from the high 50s the low 60s. While there may be fewer tourists compared to summer for the majority of this season, Christmas and New Year's will usher in loads of vacationing Spaniards and Europeans.

Key Events:

January-April

If you don't mind skipping the beach or bringing along a coat, this is a good time to visit if you're looking for a bargain trip to Barcelona. Average temperatures in January and February feature highs in the high 50s and lows in the low 40s and high 30s. But then again, you won't experience the hassle of elbowing your way through picture-taking tourists at the Park Güell or Sagrada Familia. Temperatures start to pick up in March and April, with highs in the low 60s, but April is known for getting its share of showers.

Key Events:

  • Three Kings Day (January)
  • Holy Week (March-April)
