Hurricane Katrina took a large toll on Biloxi. It decimated its casinos, damaged its famous lighthouse and took the lives of hundreds along the Gulf Coast. This 12-foot-tall black granite slab serves as a memorial to their lives and memories. It was constructed as part of television's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and features a mosaic wave (representing the storm surge) and a glass enclosed art piece filled with personal items from Katrina victims. The lighter gray granite piece on the top of the black structure is the depth of water at the height of the storm.
Recent visitors said a stop here can be brief but powerful, and that it's a nice memorial in tribute of those who perished.
