Best Times to Visit Birmingham

The best times to visit Birmingham are spring and fall, from March through May or September through November. Not only are these shoulder seasons easy on the wallet, but the weather is also great for outdoor activities like hiking and golfing. If you're really budget-conscious, a visit during the winter months from December through February is the most inexpensive. Winters are not brutally cold in this part of the southeastern U.S. and the average annual snowfall is around 2 inches. Summer is high season for tourists and can be incredibly hot and humid.

December-February

In the winter, highs generally hover in the 50s. You may see freezing temperatures during the winter, but rain is more likely than snow. Plus, the cool, dry weather is great for teeing off at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. What's more, December offers some of the lowest hotel rates, some as low as $100 a night.

Key Events:

March-May

With low humidity and days that range from the high 50s to the low 70s, spring is a wonderful time for outdoor enthusiasts to visit. Along with the pleasant temps, room rates are moderate during this shoulder season, with average lodging prices hovering around $130 to $150 for weekend visits. Spring also marks the beginning of festival season.

Key Events:

June-August

Summer season attracts throngs of visitors, high humidity and temperatures that soar into the 90s. Because it is peak season, expect higher hotel rates and busy golf courses (you may want to book a tee time in advance). On the upside, there are plenty of annual street festivals celebrating music, art and film on the calendar.

Key Events:

September-November

Like the leaves on the trees, the summer humidity drifts away in the fall, leaving brilliant summer-like days in September. Temperatures linger in the 80s, and come October and November, crisp fall mornings climb into the mid-70s by the afternoon, perfect for golfing, hiking, biking or enjoying the city's many parks and gardens. Scoring a lodging deal may be a little harder to do, though: expect average nightly rates of $150 or more.
