Getting Around Boca Raton
The best way to get around Boca Raton is on foot or by using the Downtowner, a free ride service. The oversized golf carts that comprise the Downtowner's fleet offer complimentary transit to many of the city's top sites, including Mizner Park, Red Reef Park and the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. For trips to attractions outside the downtown area (such as the Town Center and Wick Theatre), a car will come in handy. If you don't drive to Boca, you'll find the nearest major airports are in Fort Lauderdale and Miami (car rentals are available at both airports). Tri-Rail commuter trains have stations at both Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Miami International Airport (MIA). Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is another option to fly into, about 25 miles north of Boca Raton.
On Foot |
The main social gathering area of Mizner Park is eminently walkable and offers a variety of shopping, dining and entertainment options. But for getting to and from the gorgeous parks and beaches, you'll need a car or ride service. |
Bus |
Palm Beach County's public bus service, Palm Tran, operates daily and also provides service to the Tri-Rail commuter train stations. Though not as convenient as having your own set of wheels, Palm Tran will take you to popular points of interest like the Boca Raton Museum of Art and Mizner Park. A one-way fare costs $1.50; an unlimited all-day ride pass will set you back $4. |
Tri-Rail |
This commuter rail line runs from the Miami International Airport to West Palm Beach, with stations in every beach town along the way. Fares begin at $2.50 (one way) and are calculated by zone. Daily passes are also available. If you fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale, you'll find this is an economical (though more time-consuming) way to get to and from the airport. |
The Downtowner |
If you need to get around the downtown area, consider using the Downtowner, a fleet of open-air, super-sized golf carts that transport visitors for free (though tips for drivers are encouraged) from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The Downtowner takes riders as far east as the beach, and west just past Dixie Highway, including downtown and Mizner Park. To the south, it goes as far as Camino Real, and up north to approximately 20th Street. You can call on the service via its app (similar to Uber), which you can download on the Downtowner website. |
Taxi |
Locally owned Metro Taxi of Palm Beach County offers 24-hour service in Boca Raton. Although its red and white cars are easy to spot, you'll probably need to call ahead to order your ride. |
Car |
Boca Raton is an easy city to navigate by car, but parking can be pricey in some areas. However, you'll find four free parking garages located at Mizner Park. Plus, you can avoid the expensive vehicle entry fees at the city's various parks by making use of nearby metered parking. Many major rental car companies, including Enterprise, Hertz, Avis and Budget, are stationed around the city and at the nearby major airports. |
