Best Times to Visit Bruges

The best time to visit Bruges is the summer, when the weather is mild and the trees are green. Still, the weather year-round is characterized as chilly and damp -- summer temps only reach the 70s. Spring and fall act as shoulder seasons with fewer tourists and cooler temperatures. In the winter, temperatures drop to near freezing levels, which in turn keeps many visitors away.

The city begins to thaw in April and May, but Bruges has yet to see the inundation of summertime tourists. Visitors will find average temperatures in the 40s and 50s, and the weeping willows beginning to green. Travelers this time of year may even be able to score a deal on their accommodations.

Key Events:

Bruges experiences its warmest weather between June and August. The average temperature in August is 63 degrees Fahrenheit, and the thermometer rarely makes it up to the 70s. This comfortable weather ushers in popular festivals and droves of travelers.

Key Events:

  • Heilig-Bloedprocessie (May or June)
  • Klinkers (Late July-August)
  • Reiefeest (Every third August)

In early fall, temperatures begin their descent into the 50s, driving away tourist throngs. If you're willing to do your travel itinerary in layers, this could be a golden season to see Bruges. Plus, hotel prices will dip a little after the summertime high season.

It's cold and wet this time of year with average lows just above freezing and average highs in the mid 40s. You're sure to find some nice hotel deals, but you'll be doing your touring in a heavy winter coat.
