Best Times to Visit Bruges

The best time to visit Bruges is from June to August, when the weather is mild, and the trees are green. Still, the weather year-round is characterized as chilly and damp – summer temps usually don't climb higher than the 70s. Spring and fall are considered shoulder seasons that see fewer tourists and cooler temperatures, with average highs hovering in the 50s. In the winter, temperatures drop but don't reach freezing, and the city offers a variety of holiday events, including its famous Christmas markets. Fall and winter also bring the greatest chance of rain, so keep an umbrella at the ready.

April-May

The city begins to warm up in April and May, but Bruges has yet to see the inundation of summertime tourists, though some may start to filter in. Visitors will find average temperatures in the 40s and 50s, the weeping willows beginning to green, and spring flowers blanketing the city. Travelers this time of year may even be able to score a deal on their accommodations.

Key Events:

June-August

Bruges experiences its warmest weather between June and August. The average high temperature hovers around the low 70s at this time of year. This comfortable weather ushers in popular festivals and droves of travelers.

Key Events:

September-October

In early fall, temperatures begin their descent into the 40s and 50s, and rain chances increase, driving away tourist throngs. If you're willing to explore in layers, this could be a golden season to see Bruges. Plus, hotel prices will dip a little after the summertime high season. Open Monumentendag (or "Open Monument Day") is a popular event during the season in which hundreds of monuments in the Flanders region open their doors for free.

Key Events:

November-March

It's cold and wet this time of year with average lows just above freezing and average highs in the mid-40s. You're sure to find some nice hotel deals, but you'll be doing your touring in a heavy winter coat. Around Christmas and New Year's, however, there are lots of events and special decor, including an ice-skating rink at Minnewaterpark and a Christmas market on the Markt, or Market Square.
