Best Times to Visit Capri

The best times to visit Capri are May, September and October. During these months, crowds are much thinner than in the summer and temperatures still hover above 60 degrees. Summer yields fantastic sunbathing and beach opportunities, but ferries packed with daytrippers swarm the island and cause prices to inflate in July and August. You can also find fantastic deals during the winter. But many cafes and restaurants close for the season during that time, though temperatures still remain above 40 degrees. Plus, the funicular doesn't operate in January and February and several ferry routes, including trips from Positano and Amalfi, do not service the island.

September-November

The autumn months are the best time to visit Capri. In September and October, summer crowds have thinned, but most attractions and restaurants remain open. Plus, temperatures stay above 60 degrees during the daytime. You can score a great deal on a hotel if you choose to visit in the fall, where you'll still be able to enjoy well-kept hiking trails to destinations like the Punta Carena Lighthouse. If you visit in November, just be prepared for precipitation, as it is the rainiest month of the year.

Key Events:

  • "Maratona del Golfo" Capri-Naples (September)
  • Feast Day of the Madonna della Libera (September)

December-February

Because of its coastal location, Capri gets relatively cold in the winter. Temperatures remain in the 40s and 50s in December, January and February, and the sun only shines for an average of four hours a day. Plus, some popular restaurants and shops close for the season, and many hotels have limited availability. However, you can find a great deal on hotels that are open if you're willing to brave the cold. Capri is still worthwhile to visit during the winter if you want to see some historical sites and museums such as the Villa Lysis.

Key Events:

March-May

The spring is a fantastic time to visit Capri, as the weather is starting to warm up, flowers are blooming and crowds have not yet arrived. Temperatures in March rest around 50 degrees, while April and May see averages around 60 degrees. You can still strike a great hotel deal during this time of year, and many attractions and restaurants open during this time period. On a warm day, you can enjoy thinner crowds at the beaches at either Marina Grande or Marina Piccola.

Key Events:

June-August

The summer months would easily be the best time to visit Capri if not for the crowds. Temperatures sail above the 70s and boating opportunities to the Blue Grotto and other attractions abound. However, hotel and ferry rates during this time are high and lines for attractions can be long. Still, if you're looking to join in on the action, you should consider visiting during this time. Many of Capri's best festivals and parties occur during June, July and August.

Key Events:

  • Procession for the Feast Day of Saint Anthony (June)
  • Ferragosto (August)
  • Settembrata Anacaprese (August)
