Best Times to Visit Charlotte

The best time to visit Charlotte is March through May or September through November, the shoulder seasons when the city is less crowded and hotels are less expensive. Though it's tempting to visit in summer thanks to the extended hours offered by some of the city's top attractions, June through August is also the busiest (not to mention the hottest) time to be in the Queen City. Plan an early autumn visit and you'll be rewarded with mild temps and agreeable hotel prices. Winters are fairly pleasant  snow is rare and the evening lows hover between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. You'll also find that tourists abandon the city this time of year, and hotel rates take a nosedive.

March-May

Spring in Charlotte means warm weather  average highs are between the 60s and the upper 70s  and a full schedule of events. Although you might have to share the city with other vacationers, April is by far the best month to visit. This is when attractions switch to using spring and summer hours.

Key Events:

June-August

Summers in Charlotte are crowded, expensive and hot, with temperatures climbing above 100 degrees from time to time. However, the city hosts some of its most popular events, and the attractions stay open longer.

Key Events:

September-November

In fall, the crowds thin out and the hotel prices drop. The weather is more bearable than the sweltering summers, too, as the temperatures ease from the 80s into the low 70s. And although the attractions will switch over to their winter hours come October, there are still loads of events going on throughout the city. If you want to time your visit with the arrival of the region's brilliant fall foliage, know that leaves don't start changing until mid- to late October. Keep this mind if you're planning a daytrip to Asheville, where the Blue Ridge Parkway is awash in fall colors.

Key Events:

December-February

Winters mark the quiet offseason. The event schedule slows down, the temperatures dip into the 50s, hotel rates drop and attractions operate shorter hours  if they're open at all. But if your must-sees are still welcoming visitors, Charlotte can be worth it. Christmastime or the beginning of January when hotel rates and airfare are at their cheapest will be your best bet.
