Best Times to Visit Estes Park

The best time to visit Estes Park is from June to September. The four-month period of warm weather allows travelers to comfortably explore the area's offerings. Still, Estes' Parks natural wonders don't go into hibernation outside of this window; instead, winter snow makes roads significantly more difficult to navigate, and cold weather requires visitors to dress much warmer to maintain some degree of comfort. But even with the lower temperatures that typically hover around 40 degrees, winter still attracts adventurous travelers who want to test themselves against the powder snow of the Rockies.

June-September

Estes Park experiences warm weather briefly from June to September. Highs climb above 70 degrees during this period, luring tourists and raising room rates. The crowds come to take advantage of the multitude of outdoor activities available, which run the gamut from hikes through Rocky Mountain National Park to fly-fishing in the Big Thompson Canyon. Between adventure days, visitors can take in sky-high views from the Estes Park Aerial Tramway or drive the Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuously paved road in the United States. Late September draws leaf peepers, who want to catch the region's stunning autumn colors before temperatures get too chilly. While daytime temperatures remain warm from June to September, lows still hover in the 40s and warm weather yields more precipitation, so pack multiple layers to remain comfortable.

Key Events:

October-May

October still draws flocks of tourists who come to see the area's fall foliage. But, temperatures rapidly decline, with average October highs hovering just below 60 degrees, followed by highs in the 40s from November to March. Winter offers minimal options for all but Estes Park's most adventurous visitors, who come to snowshoe, cross-country or backcountry ski and ice climb. Still, travelers who prefer indoor attractions can take advantage of the stores and eateries on and around Elkhorn Avenue, the town's main drag. Temperatures climb from April to June, with highs in the low 50s and 60s, but lows remain below freezing and summer in Estes Park doesn't truly begin until the snow has cleared.
